Kevin Smith, 6+1 Studios, performed at Timrod Park in Florence today under the alias of “The Seven”.  I’ve crossed paths with Kevin many times over the past decade, but only in recent years have we become friends.  Kevin’s a great guy, brilliant guitarist, talented producer/engineer, & an extremely humble guy.  He’s been writing instrumental rock compositions for electric guitar for years. His songs are top notch if you dig instrumental music.  Kevin contacted me last week, letting me know about his show.  I immediately asked him, if he would mind me coming out with a camera in hand.  He welcomed the idea.

All of these were candidly shot (aka no posing).  I was working on my photo journalism skills.  I had a lot of fun taking these.  I used my sister’s cheap telephoto lens for 90% of these pics.  They were shot from about 30-50 feet away without a tripod.  Let me know what you think…

I think the pictures are GREAT! you have a gift for sure! i clicked on the link for the cheap telephoto lens, i’m trying to figure out one to purchase for for my canon but don’t want/can’t afford to send a lot. these pictures you took without a tripod certainly have helped my decision. so are you shooting from a 35mm film camera? i noticed the lens isn’t for a dslr…

    gillian,

    thanks for the compliment.

i’m shooting with a digital canon xti. yeah the lens I used was comparable to the lens in the link above. i think the pics came out ok b/c i was shooting in direct daylight at an ISO setting of 400. as the concert progressed (and the sun faded) the shots became increasingly blurrier. i shot around 200 pics at the concert, but only about 25 were worth keeping. it wasn’t like every pic came out this good. keep that in mind. I would’ve preferred to be able to shoot at a lower ISO setting, but the guys on the stage were moving a lot so, I couldn’t be picky.
