Here is a link to a download of seven free mp3s from a hymn project called PAGE CXVI. Some folks took these classic hymns and rearranged them to music that fans of alternative music would actually listen to. I was fortunate enough to grow up listening and singing these old hymns in a Baptist Church while simulataneously buying Radiohead albums. I saw this on John Piper’s Desiring God Blog. I think it’s awesome that Piper and his staff see the relevance (and need) of contextualizing Gospel truth in a language that people different than themselves will be able to hear it. This really isn’t anything new. Martin Luther took the tunes from drinking songs of his day and changed the words to hymns*. I like to think of it of as God’s plan for redemption of all creation (even music) in action.
*some scholars debate whether Luther really did this, but I choose to believe that he was heavily influence by those song forms.
